Bees Jan 2013
[ベン/ Ben CampbellComment(2)]

I'm having a vision of a better future for you and me.Things here on the farm are almost right where we should be.I knew it would take 4 years to become totally organic and sustainable. Thanks to our Bio Dynamic preps and hard work from some great volunteers who helped on the farm with us.We are making our own hay now and feeding it to our cows.We are getting our cow manure from the barn yard where they live during the winter and make compost with it during the summer. We use that compost to enrich our gardens. And from the garden wastes we make compost with that too.We are making our Bio Dynamic preparations from almost everything from the farm.We have created the cycle we had hoped for.We are as close to being self sustainable as a farm as we can get.
Our financial side has been helped from supporters like our CSA members and donations for our Bio Dynamic preparations and good friends.I would like to thank all of you for helping us with whatever you have done for us and our planet so far. Some of our friends have gone forward with the organic movement on their own. That's Great!!!!!!But there is still some of our new friends and friends we haven't met yet do some more good things.
One of my most pressing desires is to learn to keep Bees.Bee keeping is an expensive venture. We have one langthorne beehive that is loaned to us,but we would like to have our own bee hive and all the equipment to make honey(honey extractor).I think I can make some other types of bee hives too.
Bees are an important part of our farm for pollination. The bees are telling us we (as a society)need to change our way of farming and lifestyle's.I can talk about how important bees are for the pollination of our favorite flowers and vegetables. There is a valley in China that has used too many chemicals and gmo seeds and monocropping, which causes malnutrition for the bees, and many other circumstances, that they have to hand pollinate all the pear tree flowers by hand with chicken feathers. There are no bees there. Can they be brought back to that valley if they stopped using chemicals and became more bio diverse?Lets hope they wake up and that it doesn't happen here. Can we tell our neighbors to stop using chemicals and GMO seeds because they are killing the Bees and us?How?How many reasons will it take? How do I find out if my neighbors are using GMO seeds and if they are,how to get them to stop and chose something else, perhaps some organic seed? Can I go to my local seed store and ask them?Should I go to city hall to ask if we can be declared a no GMO zone?Should I go door to door?Who will help me?Is there someone else working on this already? Can I join them?Anyway now maybe you will see my desire to keep bees for many more reasons than them.

I'll have to learn how to keep bees and make a good environment for them. We'll be planting a lot more flowers and herbs for them. We'll start with one or two hives and try to catch wild swarms of natural honey bees.Maybe with honeybees we can help show our neighbors and everyone around the world who visit us,how important bees really are for the survival of our food source.Maybe they will see what organics and conventional farming are doing to our environment and our health.Anyone care to learn bee keeping with me or help me buy a bee hive kit to put together ourselves or get a used one or help me with the GMO zone Idea?I have a few more Ideas for my vision for us,I'd like to talk about next time.

Peace.

Congratulations on a great 2012 and your success over these last four years. I like the beekeeping idea. The bees would be great for crop pollination and the delicious honey they make. Your farm is quickly becoming the one-stop shop for delicious organic bread, milk, cheese, meat, and vegetables. Now you can add honey. We got to get some chickens together for farm fresh eggs too!

The bee colony collapse syndrome is a worrisome development that scientists all over the world are investigating. The latest findings point to a collection of factors as being the culprits. Colony stress from drought or poor food availability seems to be a thread running through many studies of why the bees are dying. Some studies point to a very toxic pesticide that has come into use. I think it is still a little too early to go banging on doors, telling people to give up GMO crops. Stay warm!

My grandfather used to keep bees, I hope it works out for you. Please check out the flow hive system that allows you to collect the honey without disturbing the hive.
